World Voices Sculpture

World Voices is the featured artwork located in the residential entrance pavilion at Burj Khalifa. This pavilion is a 4-story tall volume, and artist Jaume Plensa won a global competition to provide an art installation to complement one of the entrances to the World’s Tallest Building.

The piece consists of a series of telescoping titanium rods supporting numerous brass cymbals, each cymbal representing a country in the world. The artwork was intended to have an organic aesthetic, with the rods symbolizing reeds emerging from a water feature.

We worked with the artist to realize and enhance his vision – the 55′ long, 3″ diameter rods were precisely analyzed and designed to understand their deflected shape, to better mimic the behavior of a reed bending under its own weight.

The cymbals were located along these rods directly underneath water droplet mechanisms in the ceiling above. There were no visible connections in any of the elements – all connections were performed using sleeved machined fittings.
